CHAPTER THIRTEEN

I step out of the fortune teller’s tent onto empty fairgrounds.

It’s almost eerie, every sign and ribbon perfectly in place while not a single person talks or laughs. Only a sliver of orange light shimmers at the horizon’s edge.

Night fell.

Everyone went back to their trailers.

The two guys putting together tents on this row decided to leave the new girl behind.

As I watch, a figure breaks the wavy light in half. Tall. Strong. That description could fit a hundred guys working this circus. And a hundred guys back home. But I recognize this version of tall and strong. My body hums awareness, remembering this body slick from the shower.

I stand in the middle of the walkway, between the fortune teller’s tent and the Wonders from Around the World. The closer he gets, the more heat sinks into my skin. It’s not the warm night air that makes me flush. It’s the dark eyes. The promise in them.

“Didn’t mean to take so long,” he says, his voice a low drawl. “One of the rigging trucks broke down on the interstate. Took a bit to handle the transport.”

“No problem,” I say, waving my hand, as if to say, I’m nothing. See? Don’t worry about me. No one else has, and I’m still alive. “I can amuse myself.”

He glances at the fortune teller’s tent. “You didn’t have to start working right away.”

“Did someone tell you where to find me?”

“Don’t let Albert bother you,” he says, which means yes.

Albert. I have a feeling that he’s going to be trouble. As he said, he’s not vulgar like his friend Mikey. No, his version of dangerous is a lot more sly. “Thank you for sending Cat with the food and clothes and stuff. How much do I owe you?”

“Nothing.”

“Logan.”

“Sienna.”

We’ll have to deal with that later. Preferably when I have more money. Eventually I’ll leave, and when I do I can stash a hundred bucks in his RV. “About her mother. Madame Galilea—”

“Alessandra.”

“Yes. Her. Does she actually have…you know…visions?”

“Visions of money, perhaps. She knows what to tell people what will make them shell out more money for another prediction or an energy cleansing or whatever else she could convince them would help. She could make a lot more than this tent can provide if she weren’t caught at the throat by her addiction.”

“Alcohol?”

“Cocaine.”

“Shit.”

“Most of the time she follows the circus. Sometimes she wanders off.”

“But you live with it because of her daughter.”

“The circus means family.”

The only thing I know about family is fear. About being told you can never leave. Which makes me turn my back on him. I stroll through the wide empty lane. It was just a field before we got here. Tomorrow it will be teeming with people. How temporary. How fleeting.

I pass the tent of wonders, the tent where Travis told me who Logan was.

House of Mirrors, says another tent. This one is made of shimmery blue material.

I step closer to where a plaque reads: Find your way through an enchanting labyrinth of mirrors.
